Three major cruise lines are sending ships to St. Vincent to evacuate St Vincentians right now in danger following the eruption of the island’s La Soufriere fountain of liquid magma.
An explosive eruption rocked the La Soufrière volcano of St Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday morning, as evacuations had been ordered.
Carnival Cruise Line and the sister brands Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises all conveyed ships to the Caribbean island on April 8th.
“The cruise ships of Royal Caribbean will be first used to transport the persons from St Vincent and the Grenadines who are to be evacuated to other countries in the region who have offered temporary hospitality, namely St Lucia, Grenada, Barbados and Antigua,” he explained, adding that the British Virgin Islands has also offered assistance but arrangements have not been made.
Gonsalves indicated that other Caribbean countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and St. Kitts and Nevis have also offered support.
All lines said that precautionary measures will be required to ensure the wellbeing and security of the group and travelers locally available.
