TT Women downed 4-0 by Costa Rica in CONCACAF Championship

Costa Rica downed Trinidad & Tobago 4-0 on Friday evening at the Estadio Universitario.

Costa Rica started with a strong push and almost grabbed an opener in the 5’ from a free kick by captain Katherine Alvarado, but Trinidad and Tobago star GK Kimika Forbes stopped it.

Trinidad and Tobago had their first look in the 12’ off the boots of Jolie St Louis, but she ended up sending it to the side of GK Daniela Solera’s goalpost.

Costa Rica broke the deadlock in the 18’ when Cristin Granados took a shot from the edge of the area and put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Things turned more in Costa Rica’s favor in the 22’ when Trinidad and Tobago MF Kedie Johnson, after a tackle to Maria Paula Coto, saw her second yellow card of the night, leaving the Soca Warriors with 10 players on the field.

In the 33’ Costa Rica got their second goal of the night after a corner kick taken by Granados ended up as an own goal off a deflection from Trinidad and Tobago MF Lauryn Hutchinson.

Costa Rica kept their foot on the gas and in the 46’ Granados scored the third goal for her team, her second of the night, after a ball bounced back from the Trinidad & Tobago defense and her left-footed shot found the net.

The Ticas tallied their fourth and final goal of the day in the 48’ when Alvarado took a shot from the outside of the area, firing a rocket into the top left corner of goal.

There was also some history made in the second half when legendary player Shirley Cruz was subbed on in the 62’, earning her 100th cap for Costa Rica.

The last match for Costa Rica will be against Canada, the current Olympic champions, while Trinidad & Tobago will have their last test against Panama.
