Karline Brathwaite, Mental Health Planner at Ministry of Health, says the stigma around mental health must be removed.
She is calling on the public to do their part in addressing the stigma.
Speaking with Power 102 Digital Power Breakfast Show this morning, Ms Brathwaithe suggested that the use of colloquial terms such as “mad” and “mad house” to refer to mental illnesses and medical facilities which treat persons suffering from mental illnesses, does nothing to aid in the removal of the stigma.
She also addressed the importance of looking after one’s general mental health, particularly in the time of COVID.
Ms Bathwaithe urged persons to look after their mental health noting that prevention is better than cure.
