Senator David Nakhid denies sexism in “offensive” President comment

“It has nothing to do with a woman, let’s not be ridiculous!”

So says opposition Senator David Nakhid who is doubling down on his comments towards President Her Excellency Paula-mae Weekes which many have described as disrespectful.

His comments have divided social media with some saying he was wrong to use the term which he did to describe the President given her role as head of state.

Others meanwhile have claimed that it speaks to the attitude towards women in Trinidad and Tobago.

However, speaking with News Power Now, Senator Nakhid said his description of the President has nothing to do with her Office or her gender, instead he claims it is a description of her behavior and actions.

News Power Now reached out to various senior female figures within the UNC for comment on Senator Nakhid’s description of the President and the resulting fallout.

However, they claimed to be unaware of his exact comments as they have been preparing for the marathon sessions in Parliament this week as the Standing Finance Committee pours over the 2022 national budget.

Meanwhile, calls to UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s cell phone went unanswered.

News Power Now asked Senator Nakhid if he was bothered by the lack of support by his party colleagues over his comment to which he had this to say.
