Opposition MP: PNM “running from” elections

St Augustine MP, Khadijah Ameen is challenging Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to call the Local Government elections by March of 2023

Local Government elections have been pushed back by a year after the Cabinet yesterday approved the partial proclamation of the local government reform legislation.

Local Government Minister Faris Al Rawi revealed that cabinet approved the early proclamation of specific sections which include a provision which extends the term of local government representatives.

Minister Al Rawi said if an election was called now without proclaiming the law, councillors will have to continue to serve part time and for a further three years under the old law and reduced funding.

However, Ms Ameen, a former councillor and Regional Corporation Chairperson, says the Government’s logic is faulty and accuses them instead of attempting to “duck” an election amid rising discontent by the public.

She called on Dr Rowley to keep his word adding that his honour is on the line.
