Bandit captured after shootout with police

A man was injured after a shootout with police in Sangre Grande this morning, following a robbery.

Around 2:00a.m on Friday morning, police received a call about a burglary. On the way to the location, officers saw a silver Nissan Versa leaving the scene with the description of the burglar’s car. They attempted to stop the car but the vehicle sped away, leading the officers on a 15-minute chase.

The bandits shot at the officers in the police car who returned gunfire. The police eventually cornered the car on the westbound lane of the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway near Bestcrete factory.

One of the bandits, a 24-year-old man, was wounded in his left leg. He was captured after police caught him trying to escape. He was taken to the Arima Health Facility where he was treated for his injuries, and then taken into police custody. Police also seized a revolver.

Investigations are continuing.
