Verbal Clash In Parliament Over Pharmaceutical Items From India Into TT

A verbal clash between Member of Parliament for Mayaro, Rushton Paray and Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, in the House of Representatives on Wednesday over how many pharmaceutical items is being brought into Trinidad and Tobago from India.

MP Paray wanted Minister Deyalsingh to inform the parliament whether the Government intends to take measures to procure pharmaceutical products from India to reduce the cost of pharmaceuticals to the consumer?

In response, Minister Deyalsingh gave a detailed breakdown of the various medical items brought into the country from India under the Chronic Disease Assistance Programme.

However, MP Paray in a supplemental question wanted to know if consideration will be given to invite Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers in the country to bring additional products to the market.

Minister Deyalsingh said the government is doing what is required on this development and also claimed conflict of interest on the part of MP Paray.
