Over 350 PCA Matters Reffered To Commissioner Of Police Between 2014 To 2022

354 matters were referred by the Police Complaints Authority to the Commissioner of Police for action to be taken following complaints brought to the PCA by members of the public for the period 2014 to 2022.

During this same period, 93 matters were sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

PCA Director, David West, speaking during an inquiry into the Authority’s financial statements for 2015 to 2021 gave a break down on the complaints received and the amount sent to both the Commissioner of Police and the DPP.

Mr West was asked during the deliberation by member, Paula Gopee Scoon, what is a closed complaint to which the PCA Director indicated under which factors complaints are no longer investigated.

Complaints are handled by professional investigators who are independent of the TT Police Service.

The PCA was set up to protect citizens against abuse of those powers, including excessive force, exposes misconduct, improve police practice and policy, provides public accountability and encourages discipline within the Police.
