Woman from Suriname charged for trafficking marijuana

A 30-year-old woman from Suriname was charged with importing marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

According to reports, Janice Pengel was at the Piarco International Airport on October 4 when she was stopped and searched by PC Harris. When he and Customs and Excise officer Ali Baksh searched her luggage, they found 15 packets of marijuana weighing 17.52 kilogrammes. Pengel was arrested. The marijuana was estimated to be worth $234,000.

She appeared before an Arima Magistrate this morning and pleaded guilty to the charge. She was fined TT$25,000 and given six months to pay the fine or face six months in jail with hard labour.
