Former UNC MP Jack Warner had a lot to say to the Regulated Industries Commission’s (RIC) during their public consultation at the Centre of Excellence in Macoya on Tuesday evening.
Consultations with the public have begun over the proposed electricity rate increase.
Warner, who was a surprise attendee, accused the RIC during the open mic session of “selling dreams.”
He said the proposed new rates were unconscionable for poor people, adding that nowhere in the presentations by RIC officials had he heard anything about customers’ interests.
The RIC tried to defend the increase by showing TT and Suriname had cheaper electricity rates than a list of other Caribbean countries, but Warner said those other countries with higher rates did not have oil and gas deposits as TT.
According to Warner, a number of government ministries owe TTEC huge amounts in electricity bills and he urged them to, “pay the bills before you come to poor people.”
The RIC will soon hold more public hearings in Arima and Tobago.
