UNC to begin screening candidates for Local Gov’t election after Christmas

Deputy political leader of the United National Congress (UNC), David Lee, is hoping to begin the screening of candidates for January’s Local Government election right after the holiday season.

The bye-elections are for five electoral districts and while the PNM has already announced their candidates, Lee said his party is on par for the course.

Lee said the party will field candidates in all five districts and the aim is to retain the two seats the UNC previously held in the Cunupia and Hindustan/St Mary’s districts and try to snatch a third.

Following their screening exercise, he said they will be putting the candidates on the ground as soon as possible.”

The Local Government election takes place on January 25, with nomination day set for January 4.

Local Government Minister Kazim Hosein said he was looking forward to having these five vacancies filled with competent councillors dedicated to national service.
