Victim of shark attack to be flown to Trinidad for further treatment

Peter Smith, the 64-year-old man was mauled by a shark on the sister isle of Tobago on Friday is expected to be flown to Trinidad, according to a GML report.

Smith, a British national, was attacked by a bull shark while he was bathing at the Courland Bay around 9:15 am Friday morning. 

The incident occurred approximately 10 meters away from the shore.

The shark, estimated to be between 8 to 10 feet in length and 2 feet in width, caused severe injuries to Smith, severing his left hand from the elbow down, severing his left thigh, and resulting in a laceration to his stomach.

Smith received critical care and underwent several life-saving surgeries. 

He is in stable condition in the ICU unit.

Secretary for the Division of Health, Wellness and Social Protection told the media his limbs were saved.

She said, “So far, it seems like all of his appendages have been saved. We will provide a comprehensive status report tomorrow.”
