Two Additional Omicron Cases Recorded in Tobago, Among Them A Minor

Tobago has recorded two additional confirmed cases of the Omicron variant, increasing the total on the Island to three.

According to the Division of Health, Wellness and Social Protection, the confirmation of the 2nd Omicron case was received on January 18th and the 3rd case on January 19th via gene sequencing at the Faculty of Medical Sciences Laboratory, University of the West Indies.

The 2nd case is said to be a national and an unvaccinated minor, who recently returned to Tobago from the United States, transiting through Trinidad at which point a negative PCR test was presented. As per existing quarantine protocols for unvaccinated minors returning from travel, the individual was allowed to quarantine at home, pending the results of another PCR test 3-5 days after arrival.

The sample was collected on January 5th and returned positive two days after. As such, the entire family was placed on home quarantine. The individual is well and remains in home quarantine.

The Division said details on the 3rd case will be shared in a subsequent statement.
