Tancoo launches petition demanding gov’t address water crisis

Following demands for the Constituency of Oropouche West, MP Davenand Tancoo has launched a petition demanding that the government takes urgent action to address the water infrastructure crisis in his Constituency. The petition follows years of failed promises from the government to provide a regular, reliable water supply to the people of South Trinidad, leaving tax-paying citizens without access to a basic human need.

In a statement, he said: “For too long, the Government has neglected to invest in upgrading the water infrastructure of Oropouche West, resulting in chronic water shortages and poor water quality. Numerous constituents struggle with dry taps for weeks or even months at a time. Despite the many letters sent to WASA and the Public Utilities Minister providing both short-term and long-term solutions, the cries of the Constituency have fallen on deaf ears.

“This is an issue that affects every member of our community, and it is unacceptable that so many residents are being denied access to clean water,” said the MP for Oropouche West. “We must demand that the government take action to address this crisis and ensure that our community has access to this basic necessity.” Due to the water woes, struggling people and families are now under a heavy financial burden as they must now find additional funds to cover their own water needs. Homeowners claimed that WASA even publishes an erratic water schedule that prevents residents from carrying out their regular cleaning tasks.

Marvin Gonzales, the Minister of Public Utilities, recently claimed that numerous leaks have been fixed nationwide and that water leaks will soon be a thing of the past. This demonstrates how disconnected from reality the Minister is or how eager he is to deceive the public. The fact remains that Oropouche West and the entire country still suffer from multiple, visible leaks.

Tancoo declared “You are fooling no one Minister Gonzales. The time for excuses has passed. This is the time for action, fix the problem now or resign”
