Opposition Urges RIC To Hold Its Hand On Propsed Electricity Rate Increases

The Opposition is asking the Regulated Industries Commission to hold its hand on any increase in electricity rates.

At present, public consultations are being held on the proposed electricity increases for residential, commercial and industrial customers.

Speaking at the United National Congress Monday Night Forum, Member of Parliament for Princes Town, Barry Padarath, urged the RIC to halt the process, warning it is prepared to go the court on this issue.

The Minister of Public Utilities has reportedly indicated in April the RIC’s report will go to the cabinet which will then determine the way forward.

MP Padarath said the UNC is closely monitoring the situation and called for the  consultations to be held all across the nation and not just selective areas.
