Opposition: Teachers deserve same recognition as health care workers following pandemic

Teachers deserve the same recognition for their work during the Covid Pandemic that health workers have received from the Prime Minister.

This is the view of Tabaquite MP and UNC’s Shadow Education Minister Anita Haynes.

The government earmarked $200 million dollars for healthcare workers who laboured tirelessly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Finance Minister Colm Imbert made the announcement on Friday while speaking at the Spotlight on the Economy event hosted by the Ministry of Finance.

On August 23, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley told attendees at a PNM meeting at the Belmont Community Centre that he would instruct the Finance Minister to include a “separate and special payment” for healthcare workers to thank them for their service.

Haynes told News Power Now this morning that while she agrees with Dr Rowley’s commendation and monetary compensation for their undeniable tenacity and hard work during the pandemic, teachers deserve the same.

She said that while the teachers’ actions may have upset some parents, one has to remember that they too are subject to the high cost of living like everyone else.

Haynes said that the Government should recognise the hard work by the teachers, instead of seeking to villanise them.

She stated the Government bore some of the responsibility for closed schools on Monday.
