MATT expresses concern over archaic Sedition Act

The Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago has expressed concern about the Sedition Act. In a statement issued yesterday MATT said the 99-year-old act is a threat to freedom of expression and can potentially criminalise journalists.

The association is calling for the act to be reviewed and repealed. “As we reflect on our journey from crown colony to independent existence, MATT considers the recent re-mobilisation of selected provisions of the 99-year-old Sedition Act incompatible with citizens’ constitutional right to freedom of expression”.

This in the wake of charges related to Sedition brought against PSA president Watson Duke earlier this week.
