Helen Humphrey dies at 84

Helen Humphrey, Queen of Carnival 1980 and wife of former politician John Humphrey has died.

Mrs Humphrey died at her Glencoe home just before midnight on Wednesday.

She was 84-years-old.

Her husband John, in a Newsday report, said they were asleep when he heard her coughing around 11:30pm.

He said she went to the bathroom and when she came out, she mentioned being unable to breath.
Humphrey, said she was able to make it back to bed and then she passed away. He said it was cardiac arrest.

Mr Humphrey is expected to turn 90 on February 19.

The two were together for 66 years and bore three children. He said they had a wonderful life.

He said they are planning a very small and private funeral for her, as per her request and she will be cremated.

Mrs Humphrey was credited with bringing Downs Syndrome out of the darkness and into acceptance, through the association she founded.
