Government Propsoses Increasing Scrap Iron Theft Fine To $100,000

The government is proposing to increase the fine for the theft of scrap iron from 15,000 to 100,000 dollars.

Minister of Finance, Colm Imbert, said the measure will take effect from January next year.

It was announced in Monday’s national budget in the parliament.

In defending the measure, Minister Imbert said the move is necessary at this time.

Action will also be taken by the ruling administration on illegal quarrying and the appropriate legislative changes will be made in early 2023 in a bid to address this serious development.
