Former NSOC director: “Questions must be asked” after police teargas incident

Garvin Heerah, former director of the National Security Operations Centre (NSOC), says questions must be asked and answered regarding the actions of the police at Sunday’s protest at the Queens Park Savannah.

The police have been roundly condemned by trade union leaders, political parties including the Opposition and former Police Commissioner Gary Griffith for the use of tear gas to disperse protesters at the event.

Videos footage also appeared to show innocent civilians in their cars affected by the use of the teargas.

Mr Heerah said only the police could know why their actions escalated as fast as it did.

However, Mr Heerah suggested that intelligence received by the police may have influenced their actions.

Mr Heerah also called on the authorities to revisit how they can best allow the public to exercise their right to protest within the framework of the COVID regulations.
