Criminologist says Harewood-Christopher has showed no significant improvement in the detection rate

Criminologist Professor Ramesh Deosaran said Police Commissioner, Erla Harewood-Christopher should be more careful when making certain utterances.

During the T&T Police Service Sports and Family Day on Saturday, Harewood-Christopher rated her performance as excellent.

Deosaran, in a GML report, said he believes that she made the statement on the run and he thinks it was more of a metaphor.

“To me, I haven’t taken that, forgive me for being too serious, because she jokingly laughing and telling the press excellent,” he said.

Professor Deosaran said self-assessment is part of a valid human resource measure, but it must be accompanied by other measures. He said on one hand, Harewood-Christopher and the TTPS need support but on the other hand, there is a disturbing escalation of murders, home invasions and public fear of crime.

“She also have to draw into her plans the conditions that drive the home invasions and the brutal murders that we are witnessing, not to judge and CoP, in his/her first 100 days, is very challenging if you looking for any quick crime reduction,” he explained.

He called on the public and the police to continue the support because she has not showed any significant improvement in the detection rate and needs to show a renewed and more effective system of public communication and partnership.

“If a year finishes and she doesn’t reach that point, she will be subjected to excessive scrutiny, she has to deal with the question of gang activities…and praedial larceny is on the loose.”
