COP Gary Griffith seeks to employ more non lethal weapons including tasers

The TTPS has signaled it’s intention to increase the use of non lethal weapon including tasers, pepper sprays, and even body cameras.

Commissioner Gary Griffith confirmed in an interview with IzzSo this is all in keeping with plans to modernized the TTPS and implement a cogent use of force policy. He confirmed that one hundred tasers were already in use and he was training officers in the proper use and application of non lethal weapons.

He also stated the body cameras he was hoping to employ were more sophisticated than the standard issue in that they activated when the officer drew his weapon and had better tracking capabilities in high tension and high movement situations so they were much more reliable.

He projected that in the new year at least another 600 tasers should be in the hands of officers. He also hoped to employ the use of pepper spray at some point when officers were properly trained.
