Beetham resident says no Gov’t intervention yet…despite protest

No Government representative has reached out to the Beetham residents following this morning’s protest action.

An unknown number of residents reportedly emptied debris onto both the West bound and East bound lanes of the highway before setting it alight,

One member of the community, Kareem Marcelle, told News Power Now that the protest was spurred on by inaction regarding collapsed sewer lines running through the community.

He explained that residents were told by the MP for the area Fitzgerald Hinds and the Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales that repairing the 40 year old pipes should take 1 month.

Marcelle said that the works initially began in October/November last year but has since paused.

He explained that the stench has become unbearable and has even forced some people out of the community altogether.

News Power Now inquired as to whether there has been any feedback from MP Hinds or Minister Gonzales on the matter.

However, Marcelle said that up till news time, he had neither heard nor seen any Government representative come to address residents’ concerns.
