Another shutdown for T&T is not an option

Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh said another shutdown for T&T is not an option during the pandemic.

Speaking during the Health Ministry’s Virtual Media briefing on Saturday, Deyalsingh said that a shutdown damages economic activity and results in job losses.

The minister was at the time responding to a question posed and said it shouldn’t even be a discussion.

He said everything must be done to keep cases down so that the economy stays open.

The healthcare system at this level, he said, had agreed hospitals treating covid19 patients should not be more than 20 per cent filled.
“Either at the ambulatory level, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or the High-Dependency Unit (HDU).

Deyalsingh said “We have maintained that brilliantly for the past month and a half. We have been between 15 to 18 per cent. So we could treat a lot more cases without shutting down the country. And that should be our goal as a country.”

According to the minister: “The discussion has to be personal responsibility, heeding the public health advice and we are all our brother’s keeper in this.”
