Police Officer Charged, Ordered To Have No Contact With Girlfriend.

A police constable with ten years’ service was ordered to have absolutely no contact with his girlfriend after appearing before a Sangre Grande Magistrate charged with common assault.

DARREN RAGOOBIR, 38, of Cumuto, pleaded not guilty to the offence before Magistrate Cheron Raphael who ordered that he stay one hundred meters away from his girlfriend and to have no communication with her as part of his bail conditions which were set at one hundred and fifty thousand dollars with a surety.

RAGOOBIR, who is currently on suspension from duty, was arrested on August 13th following a police report in which a woman alleged her boyfriend threatened her while holding a weapon at their home.

According to the woman, during an argument first started on WhatsApp, her boyfriend demanded she leave the house.

She reported to the police the man took up a weapon and made threats towards her.

The Gender-Based Violence Unit began investigations into the report following which WPC Narinesingh of the Northern Division laid the charge of common assault against RAGOOBIR.

This is the third police officer to be charged by the GBVU for a similar offence in the last four weeks.
