Webster-Roy: Greater level of vigilance needed to protect digital spaces of women and girls from predators

Minister with responsibility for Gender and Child Affairs, Ayanna Webster-Roy, delivered Trinidad and Tobago’s Country Statement at the 7th Plenary Meeting at CSW67 on Thursday, at the United Nations Head Quarters in New York.

In her contribution, Webster-Roy highlighted that, “The Government of Trinidad and Tobago innovatively applies technology in delivering social support programmes to citizens.
Beneficiaries, comprising mostly women in vulnerable situations, now receive electronic transfers for social grants directly into their bank accounts. Tele and virtual counselling, virtual parenting workshops, and other psychosocial family initiatives have also been introduced as a means of expanding the net of inclusion.”

Additionally, she echoed the sentiments of other attendees in reiterating that like them, “…Trinidad and Tobago recognizes that a world in which women are equal partners and stakeholders, will result in greater opportunities and growth for all, will contribute to the acceleration of the SDGs and will redound to the benefit of all.”

She said, “Women and girls face new and emerging risks through opportunities for crimes such as cyber bullying, human trafficking and non-consensual distribution of intimate images. This demands a greater level of vigilance as we seek to protect the digital spaces of women and girls from predators.”
