Venezuela to receive first doses of Sputnik V vaccine next week, Maduro says

A first batch of 100,000 doses of the Russian vaccine for the new Sputnik V coronavirus out of a total of 10 million ordered will be delivered to Venezuela next week, Latin American President Nicolas Maduro said on Tuesday.

“We will start vaccinating the medical staff, all the health personnel of the country, then the most vulnerable people, then the teachers,” the head of state said during a televised speech.

The order was made during a visit by a Russian delegation in November.

The health authorities of Venezuela, a country with a population of thirty million, officially report 130,596 cases of SARS-CoV-2 and 1,240 deaths due to COVID-19. But the opposition and non-governmental organizations such as Human Rights Watch (HRW) do not consider the official statistics reliable.
