TTPSSWA Head says comments taken out of context on overworked police officers

President of the Police Social and Welfare Association ASP Gideon Dickson is seeking to clarify comments attributed to him in a newspaper article this morning.

It stated that he promised that from next year police officers will not be subjected to arduous working conditions on Carnival Monday and Tuesday.

It said he gave the promise after police officers claimed they were subjected to long working hours with no washroom facilities, no back-up and nowhere to rest.

The complaints from the officers came even as Police Commission Erla Harewood-Christopher issued a statement commending them for contributing to a safe Carnival.

Dickson told the Power Breakfast Show this morning that his comments were taken out of context.

He explained his issue lay with how officers were rostered to work during the two day event.

Dickson said there is room for improvement with the deployment of police manpower during Carnival in the Port of Spain Division.

He also commented on the concept that officers may feel overworked for carnival because they take on the added responsibility of working at various fetes during the season.

He explained that the two are separate things.
