Trade Minister To Senate: Government Has No Say In TCL Collective Bargaining Matters

It is not within the remit of the government to advise on the measures being taken by a private company such as Trinidad Cement Limited to resolve issues related to collective bargaining.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Paula Gopee Scoon, made this position known in the Senate on Tuesday afternoon.

The Opposition inquired, given the December 2021 protest action by TCL workers demanding payment of outstanding Cost of Living Allowance over the past seven years, what measures were being taken by the company to resolve this issue.

Minister Gopee Scoon, stated that TCL is a listed company on the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange, and has been privatise since 1990. As such the company has not been owned or managed by the government in any form or fashion for over thirty years.
