Seventy-five-year-old man found murdered at family home in Aripero

The body of Seventy-five-year-old Hilton Smith was found at around 10.30 p.m. by his brother, Francis Antoine, at a family home at Black Heat Avenue, Silver Stream, Aripero. The elderly man visiting Trinidad from Canada has been murdered in his family’s home by intruders. His brother, Francis Antoine, who went to check on him found his body which had been gagged, and his feet and hands tied.  Antoine said he looked through a window and saw Smith face down on a bed, clad only in underwear. Antoine called the police.

Police broke into the bedroom and found that Smith’s hands had been tied behind his back with a bandana, a cloth had been stuffed into his mouth, and there was masking tape wrapped around his mouth, hands and feet. The upstairs part of the house where Smith was staying  had been ransacked.

Smith was resident in Canada since 1976, had arrived in Trinidad in November 2023.  He was supposed to return to his home in Montreal on Friday, the day his body was found. Smith’s nephew, Michael Edward, was the last person to see him alive at around 10 a.m. on Friday.

Detectives believe robbery may have been the motive as Smith was wearing a gold chain and ring, which could not be found after police searched the house. Homicide detectives are trying to obtain CCTV footage from the area. Investigations are continuing.
