Russian University student under arrest for sharing IG story on the war

University student Olesya Krivtsova, 20, is under house arrest with an electronic tag on her leg, so Police can monitor her every move.

Her alleged crime was for anti-war posts on social media.

One of them concerned last October’s explosion on the bridge linking Russia to annexed Crimea.

“I posted an Instagram story about the bridge,” Olesya tells the BBC, “reflecting on how Ukrainians were happy with what had happened.”

She had also shared a friend’s post about the war.

Olesya recalls, “when I heard the front door opening. Lots of police came in. They took away my phone and shouted at me to lie on the floor.”

The Russian student was detained for the first time in December last year after one of her friends tipped off the police with the screenshot of her post.

However, she was acquitted by the district court, which restricted her communication and dismissed the prosecution’s demand to ban her movements.
