MoH says no need to worry yet over deadly fungus spreading across US

No need to panic!
With international reports of the emergence of a deadly fungus in the United States that is spreading at an alarming rate, Health Minister, Terrence Deyalsingh, has assured that there is no reason for locals to worry, at least not yet.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention labelled the Candida auris or C. auris fungus a national health concern.
The fungus, which is said to be drug-resisenta, can cause bloodstream infections, wound infections and ear infections. It has also been isolated from respiratory and urine specimens, but it is unclear if it causes infections in the lung or bladder.
It causes severe illness in patients at long-term health facilities and people with weakened immune systems.

Deyalsingh, in a brief comment to GML, admitted that he was aware of the reports coming out of the US, but he assured that the ministry’s team will be looking into it.

He told the media house: “We’ll have to have the CMO (Dr Roshan Parasram) look at it.”
