A young man identified as Virgil Sandy, drowned while swimming at the Ortoire River on Wednesday.
Mayaro Police are now investigating.
They’ve reported that Sandy, a 24-year-old labourer, of Church Road, Mayaro, along with two other friends, all of Church Road — went out in a boat to set a fishing net at the Ortoire River, when they decided to go for a swim. This took place around 3:30 pm Wednesday.
However, while swimming across the river, Sandy got into difficulty and disappeared under the water.
An alarm was raised and a search involving fishermen immediately ensued.
Sadly, Sandy’s body was found around 8:45 am the following day, Thursday 3 December 2020.
PC Gumbs of the Mayaro Police Station is investigating.
