Listen: Dr Varma Deyalsingh says pay attention to red flags in relationships

Changes in the behavioural patterns of a mate could suggest that something serious is amiss and paying attention to those red flags could save a life.

This is the view of Psychiatrist Dr Varma Deyalsingh who spoke with News Power Now this morning.

He made the comment following the horrific decapitation of four year old Amarah Lallitte at her Arouca home on April 8 by a male relative of her mother.

Dr Deyalsingh said that while a spouse may not in themselves suffer from mental illness they may have a psychotic break that may propel them to do something drastic.

He maintained that paying attention to certain changes in behaviour is important.

He explained that in certain cases like acute psychosis it is difficult to tell.

Acute psychosis can be described as a clinical syndrome that involves hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thoughts or behaviors, or some combination of these within an acute timeframe (often less than 1 month).
