A donation fraud attempt against the state last year was not reported to the police.
The reason given by Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Stuart Young, is that it was generated outside of the jurisdiction of Trinidad and Tobago.
Minister Young made this known during the question and answer period in the Senate Tuesday.
Mr Young said the matter of determining the identity of the perpetrator would have been difficult and it was not pursued further.
He said no funds were exchanged following a fraud attempt against the state after someone using an international phone number informed the Prime Minister an up-front payment had to be made in order to get funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
At news briefing last year, the Prime Minister said he was told by the Chairman of Caricom, the Office of the Secretary General of the United Nations, had received a substantial grant from the Foundation, to be distributed to Caribbean countries to help in the region’s poverty eradication programme.
However, Minister Young said when the Prime Minister tried to speak with the Secretary General of the UN he was told an advance payment had to be made in order to get money from the Foundation.
