Gas leak at Nutrimix sends 11 workers to hospital

Eleven employees of Nutrimix’s Marabella facility had to be rushed to hospital on Tuesday, following a gas leak at the location.

In a statement yesterday, the company said the employees were taken to the hospital for observation “out of an abundance of caution” and were discharged shortly after.

“There were no injuries and the company’s emergency response plans were executed successfully,” the company said.

The ammonia leak occurred around 10 am at the Nutrimix compound on the Harmony Hall Industrial Estate.

Two employees were taken to the San Fernando General Hospital by first responders while nine others were transported by a GMR Ambulance and other employees’ vehicles.

Initial investigations revealed that a faulty valve attached to a vent line ruptured causing the leak.

Following the incident, fire fighters from the Mon Repos and Savonetta Fire Station Fire Stations under the supervision of FSSO Taylor and FSO Sirjusingh and Nutrimix’s HCE manager inspected the plant and building and it was deemed safe. There were no fires, serious injuries or damage to property.

Investigations are continuing.
