Emperor Valley Zoo doing its part to keep animals cool in the heat

The Zoological Society of Trinidad and Tobago (ZSTT) is assuring that steps are being taken to safeguard animals in its care at the Emperor Valley Zoo against the heat.

In a statement, the ZSTT responded to concerns about the zoo animals’ well-being, stating that regular procedures for combatting heat have been activated.

The body said each enclosure is equipped with adequate sources of water for both drinking and bathing.

To maintain a cool environment, equipment is used to gently mist the animals with water. This is done for birds and mammals.

Each animal has proper shelter to shade themselves either via man-made structure or natural vegetation. The natural environment of the plants and trees aid in keeping the area cooler.

Finally, the ZSTT said its staff is consistently monitoring and keeping check of all animals in their designated sections.

“Therefore we will be able to quickly access and counteract any signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke displayed,” the body said.
