97 new officers join the TTPS

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) welcomed 97 recruits who trained for the past nine months in preparation for joining the noble profession of policing.

Batch 1 of 2022, Squads A through E, officially became police officers on Wednesday 13th September, 2023 at a graduation ceremony held at the Gymnasium, Police Academy, St. James.

Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Erla Harewood-Christopher, congratulated the graduates on their success, acknowledging the significance of their achievement. She commended them on being undaunted by the arduous training, and the mental and physical challenges they would have faced.

The Commissioner expressed that given the dynamic nature of law enforcement today, officers are called to do more than ever before, earning additional titles of councillors, teachers and even mid-wives. She reminded the new officers of the importance of the attributes of honesty and integrity in conducting their duties as police officers and the role they play in maintain public trust and confidence.

“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”

The theme for the day was the famous quote by former New York City Police Commissioner and later President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. Guest Speaker, Attorney at Law, Mr. Phillip Wilson provided an inspirational address to the graduates, recounting, personal hardships and his own time in the police service. He stressed the need for personal self-belief and daily affirmations as vital tools for success.

Also on hand to celebrate with the recruits were DCP Curt Simon, Snr. Supt, Ali Mohammed, Asst. Supt. Kerry Lumpress, Provost, Police Academy, Dr. Simon Alexis, ASP Richard Taylor and ASP Gideon Dickson.

The new officers’ celebration continued with their Passing-Out Ceremony at 4 pm, which took place at the Police Club House, Police Academy, St. James.
