WASA to cut 200 managers jobs in restructuring process

Management staff at the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) to be significantly reduced in number and restructured as Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales says the “restructuring process, especially the leadership restructuring”, of the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is “well under way” as he announced yesterday that the new “executive leadership package” will target 426 managers of the State water provider with the aim of “seeking to reduce that by about 50 or 40%”.

WASA aiming to cut between 170 to just over 200 management positions. Gonzales spoke to reporters after he led a site visit of the Acono Road Well and Intake Facility in Maracas, St Joseph. Gonzales said once the restructuring committee “approves the recommendation for the executive compensation package at WASA next week, the chairman will announce a media conference for the leadership, the new leadership, of the Water and Sewerage Authority”.

WASA’s chairman Ravindra Nanga accompanied Gonzales on the site visit at the Acono Road Well and Intake Facility yesterday said that there are a little over 5,000 employed at WASA. He said the new management at the authority will decide if there is going to be a reduction in the number of people employed at WASA. He added that was one of the problems at WASA was that the authority was top-heavy.”
Nanga said the Authority has indicated to the unions representing the employees that “once the new executive is in place as we trickle down the unions will be consulted”. Gonzales added that the WASA restructuring plan “survived” three “injunctive” court actions filed by the Public Services Association (PSA).
