WASA says no sewage dumped in Diego Martin River, but it was improper practice

The Water and Sewage Authority says contrary to information circulating online, no sewage has been dumped into the Diego Martin River.

It said on Thursday 26th October 2023, the Authority was alerted to images circulating on social media of a WASA Tanker discharging a substance into the Diego Martin River.

It revealed that an investigation was immediately launched into the matter, which revealed that the substance was not sewage, but grey water from a job being conducted in the Port of Spain area at the time.

Consequently, the Authority advised that the grey water discharged was not harmful to public health or the environment.

It noted however, notwithstanding this, the manner in which the grey water was handled, does not conform to the strictest standards by which the Authority is guided.

The Authority says it will be taking the necessary steps to hold the person/s engaged in the activity, to account for their actions.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety, in both its water and wastewater operations, and assured the public that both the water supply and wastewater systems remain uncompromised.
