Vehicle belonging to Deputy Prisons Commissioner shot at in Barataria; driver injured

The driver of a vehicle belonging to the Deputy Commissioner of Prisons was wounded on Wednesday morning after gunmen opened fire on the vehicle in Barataria.

Residents reported hearing a hail of gunshots around 7am and upon checking saw a white SUV riddled with bullets.

The 49-year-old driver, who is also a prison officer, was at the Deputy Commissioner’s house, when two cars, a white Toyota Axio and a gold Nissan Almera drove up to the prison officer’s car.

Three masked gunmen got out and shot at the prison officer.
The officer ducked behind the dashboard avoid being shot but was wounded twice in his upper and lower right arm.

The men reportedly used high powered assault rifles in the attack.

The gunmen got back in the cars and drove off.

Officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force were called in and took the wounded prison officer to hospital.

Officers of the Barataria CID visited the scene and are continuing enquiries.
