UNC Senator laments state of crime and poor treatment of needy following food card fiasco

United National Congress senator, Jearlean John, says the party will be hosting a series of public consultations on crime in the New Year.

John, speaking a media briefing on Thursday, lamented the state of crime and, in particular, the death of businesswoman Lana Sahadeo.

Sahadeo was fatally shot when she looked out her window as three men were killed in St Augustine on Wednesday.

Senator John said the country is in chaos and assured that the Opposition Leader has committed to meeting with citizens in 2024.

John used the briefing on Thursday to also slam the government’s response over issues with Christmas food cards distributed to Members of Parliament.

She said, people affected by the “technical error” deserve much more than an apology from the government, given the embarrassment they would have felt when they attempted to make purchases using the card.

John added: “Can you imagine, a mother or a father counting on their 10 fingers and their 10 toes. Already, when you are poor, you feel shut out, you feel vulnerable. You feel as if nobody cares and you don’t matter.”

The Senator continued: “Then, you go up to the cashier and this thing is not working and the whole line behind you is seeing this thing is not working.

She said government owes people more than an apology and the Minister of Social Development and Family Services, Donna Cox needs to go. “This is totally untenable.”

“How much will we tolerate?” John asked.

The MP said First Citizens’ Bank was also to blame, as she accused the bank of being “uncaring” in the face of food card users’ plight.
