Trade unions uniting for May Day march

Members of the local trade union movement are set to stage a march through the streets of San Fernando on Wednesday, May 1st, in celebration of International Workers Day or May Day.

The theme at this year’s event is, “Unite To Fight, One Movement! One Voice! Justice for All!!!.”

The Oilfields Workers Trade Union (OWTU) has confirmed that the solidarity march will begin at 9:00 am from the OWTU Head Office, 99A Circular Road, San Fernando.

“The event will begin with various trade union leaders bringing short solidarity statements. Following this, the gathering will proceed to march the route,” the release said.

The March will culminate at Harris Promenade with an address by the President General of Contractors and General Workers Trade Union (CGWTU), Ermine De Bique-Meade.

The route for the May Day solidarity march begins at OWTU Head Office on Circular Road in San Fernando.  From there, trade unionists and members will move unto Royal Road, then turn west on Royal Road and proceed unto Coffee Street. 

The release added that they will march along Coffee Street to Lord Street; then march down Lord Street to Mucurapo Street and proceed south along Mucurapo Street to Sutton Street. They will move east along Sutton Street to Cipero Street and turn right unto Cipero Street.  From there, they turn right unto Rushworth Street and proceed west to the western carriageway of Independence Avenue unto Chancery Lane. 

Once on Chancery Lane, marchers will continue unto lower High Street, turning right and then left unto High Street.  They will proceed up High Street to Library Corner, and then unto Harris Promenade.
