UNC files breach of privilege motion against Faris

The Opposition United National Congress has written to the Speaker of the House of Representatives seeking leave to move a motion of Privileges against Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi.

UNC PRO Kirk Meighoo wrote: In an attempt to deflect from the many damaging allegations against his conduct while in office, Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi made misleading and false statements during his Budget Presentation on Friday 4th October 2022.

Responding to the contribution by the Leader of the Opposition Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC, MP, Al-Rawi stated: “And the Leader of the Opposition is also not telling the country that under her prime ministership… rented properties to … Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s family members …received rentals from the Government.”

The UNC said: “With these patently false statements, the Attorney General continues to debase himself and his office. These are the actions of a desperate man who is frantically trying to find cover from the serious accusations of misconduct that have been levelled against him.”

Dr Roodal Moonilal, MP for Oropouche East, has filed the Motion of Privileges to the Speaker in an attempt to ensure that such lies and untruths are not allowed to persist. The population will not be sidetracked by Al-Rawi’s attempts to divert scrutiny from behaviour.

The Opposition added: “Try as he might, Al-Rawi cannot mask the fact that he must answer questions over the sale of his Porsche to former Police Service commission member Roger Kawalsingh. Nor can he conceal the fact that while thousands across our nation struggle to make ends meet, he and his relatives are receiving millions of taxpayer monies from the Rowley government with the approval of his cabinet colleagues.”
We will continue to expose and unmask the blatant lies of Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi and all those with this corrupt and immoral Rowley Government.”
