TTUTA says school violence can be dealt with by early intervention of deviant students

President of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers association Antonia De Freitas says that the issue of violence in schools is nothing new.

However she says that it’s an issue that must be dealt with.

She told News Power Now that the problem is perennial and has been articulated by TTUTA for some time.

She says that contrary to present opinion it is not the duty of teachers to place themselves in harms way when students become violent, by parting a fight or getting otherwise involved.

She said that there should be help for students who have behavioural issues.

She maintained that early intervention is key to helping such students and ensuring that burgeoning violent tendencies are nipped in the bud before the student or others are harmed.
