TT Women lose to Mexico in Road to W Gold Cup action

League A of the Road to W Gold Cup wrapped up on Tuesday night with Mexico edging Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 in their Group A finale at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

The result completes a perfect RTWGC campaign for El Tricolor with four wins in four matches. The Mexico victory also means that Puerto Rico have qualified for the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup Prelims. Mexico previously qualified for the W Gold Cup group stage.

Mexico dominated the first half but did not get on the scoresheet until the final minutes before halftime, but they did so in style.

Cristina Ferral collected a ball out outside the area and then smashed a right-footed strike into the top right corner in the 40’ for a 1-0 Mexico lead.

The visitors were eager to add to their lead in the second stanza but there was no way past Trinidad and Tobago GK Simone Eligon, who made a diving save on a Jacqueline Ovalle shot in the 63’, barely tipping the ball wide.

Eligon would come up with another series of saves in the final quarter-hour to keep her side in it, but in the end the three points would belong to Mexico.
