T&T will never stop importing food says Supermarket boss

We will never get out of the business of importing foods.

So says Supermarket Association President, Rajiv Diptee, Speaking on Power 102 Digital’s Power Breakfast Show he explained that our import bill can be reduced however if we can focus on wheat and corn production.

He noted though that this will require significant Government intervention.

The Supermarket boss cited “economies of scale” capital expenditure, praedial larceny, land grabbing, and lack of land tenure as major challenges facing the farming industry.

Describing farming as a “paycheck to paycheck” industry, he said farmers will need assistance and further investment if they are to ever be in a position to impact the import bill.
