T&T has 2nd highest COVID death ratio in the Caribbean

Trinidad and Tobago has the 2nd highest COVID death ratio in the Caribbean.

Case fatality ratio (CFR) is the proportion of individuals diagnosed with a disease who die from that disease.

According to online data tracking sites, including caribbeanvirustracker.com and ourworldindata.org, T&T ranks 2nd with a case fatality ratio of 2.9

The only Caribbean nation with a higher ratio is that of Montserrat with 3.0

Chief Epidemiologist Dr Avery Hinds yesterday, speaking at the Ministry’s COVID Health Briefing, admitted that the policy which guides the calculation of the country’s COVID death rate policy may account for the figure.

T&T currently classes any COVID positive patient who dies, regardless of the cause of death, as a COVID death.

Hinds also noted that it may be unfair to compare countries as other public health factors may differ greatly.
