Second attempt to elect a presiding officer in the THA today

Another attempt will be made today to elect a new presiding officer of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA).

Leaders of both the PNM and PDP parties have been asked to attend the session today, along with the Assemblymen they lead.

Reports are that the Clerk of the THA issued a letter to the political parties on Friday and highlighted that Monday’s session is being convened “In light of the response received in addressing the scheduling of a meeting to continue the election of a Presiding Officer.”

Twelve elected assemblymen, 6-PNM and 6-PDP, were sworn in on January 28, but they were unable to agree on a mutual appointee for the position of presiding officer.

The PNM had nominated attorney Ingrid Melville, while the PDP nominated programme coordinator at the Department of Youth Affairs, Julien Skeete.

Once a Presiding Officer is selected it then clears the way for the selection of a Chief Secretary.
