Russia breaks Olympic truce by invading Ukraine

The International Olympic Committee is condemning Russia for invading Ukraine during the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics, threatening the safe passage of athletes.

The Olympic Truce has been in place since Ancient Greek times but was properly reinstated back in 1994, and there will be great consequences for Russia.

It also highly threatens Ukrainian athletes’ ability to compete in the Games considering the ongoing invasion.

The truce is there to make sure all athletes have a safe passage to the Olympics and ensure the promotion of world peace.

“The Olympic Truce is a tradition originating from ancient Greece that dates back to 776 BC. A “truce” was announced before and during the Olympic Games to ensure the host city state was not attacked and athletes and spectators could travel safely to the Games and peacefully return to their respective countries.”
